                                    20 History1844On 21 August 1844, Ordinance No. 15 of 1844, %u2018An Ordinance to establish a Supreme Court of Judicature at Hongkong%u2019, came into effect, establishing the Supreme Court of Hong Kong. The first Chief Justice of Hong Kong was John Walter Hulme, who promptly admitted the first Attorney General, Paul Ivy Sterling, at the first sitting of the Supreme Court on 1 October 1844, alongside Henry Charles Sirr1. They were Hong Kong%u2019s first barristers %u2013 hardly a critical mass. The next day, on 2 October 1844, Sterling prosecuted the first criminal case before the Supreme Court of Hong Kong, a case of abduction where James William Norton-Kyshe Vol. I, XIII2.a husband and wife had induced 2 young women onto a boat and then sold them for HK$90 each in Canton3.
